“I think it gives you an idea of how well your kids are willing to
compete,” Dana Hills coach Brent Melbon said. “Are they willing to
scratch and claw and fight?” No team did that better than Mater
Dei, which played three games in a row Saturday and won the final two,
including a 28-26 thriller against Los Alamitos in the final. Jaron
Hytche caught the winning touchdown, one of two for the running back in
the championship. The Monarchs lost to the Griffins, 27-26, earlier in the afternoon. “I
was very interested to see how we would come back in the loser’s
bracket,” Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said. “We really rose up
against Los Al. That’s the most important thing to me. Were (my
players) going to rise to the occasion and battle their way out of the
loser’s bracket? Or were they not going to show any character and get
beat and everyone’s going, Uh-oh, we got some issues?”
